Prince Harry Views Destruction, Walks the Boardwalk During Shore Visit

The British prince was joined by Gov. Chris Christie in surveying the damage from Hurricane Sandy in Seaside Heights.

Britain's Prince Harry did what most people would do on a sunny, spring day in Seaside Heights—take in the ocean views, then play some boardwalk games. Harry came to Seaside Heights with Gov. Chris Christie Tuesday morning after the two toured destruction caused by Superstorm Sandy in Mantoloking. The pair drove south on Route 35 and entered the boardwalk at Grant Avenue where crowds of people were waiting for their arrival. "Prince Harry, we love you," shouted one small girl who was holding a welcome sign. Standing next to her was an Elvis Presley impersonator, hoping to attract some attention of his own from the prince. Harry and Christie were greeted by local officials, who escorted the pair out to Casino Pier, the site of the now-…

AG: Oaklyn Woman Faked State Job for Free Generator Post-Sandy

Marcella Friedman lied about her job and demanded free goods from roadside vendors in Burlington County after Superstorm Sandy, state officials charge.

State employee and Oaklyn resident Marcella Friedman allegedly posed as an inspector and coerced roadside vendors into giving her a free generator in the days after Superstorm Sandy. Friedman, 49, told two roadside vendors set up in Springfield, Burlington County, that she was a state inspector capable of shutting down their sale of generators and fining them, according to Attorney General Jeffrey S. Chiesa. The encounter happened on Oct. 31, just after the monster storm hit New Jersey.  Friedman, wearing a jacket with the New Jersey State Police logo and carrying a handheld radio, said she’d overlook the stand if the men gave her a free generator, Chiesa said. The vendors handed over an 8,500-watt generator, which Friedman gave to a …

Sweeney’s Sandy Barb Unleashes GOP Anger

State Senate President Steve Sweeney implies Gov. Chris Christie prayed for a storm like Sandy, as Republicans attack his remarks.

The state Senate president might be wishing he could turn back the clock a few hours, after Republicans seized on Steve Sweeney’s statement that Gov. Chris Christie is “lucky” Superstorm Sandy struck. Sweeney, a Democratic state senator from West Deptford, was quoted as saying Christie’s “job package is a hurricane. I guess he prayed a lot and got lucky a storm came,” according to the Philadelphia Inquirer. Sweeney, speaking Monday afternoon, was making a point that a natural disaster shouldn’t be an employment solution for New Jersey. Sweeny apologized in the next breath for the statement, but it was too late. Republicans quickly began issuing releases slamming Sweeney for his remarks, made ahead of Christie’s State of the State speech …

Christie Lambasts House GOP's 'Toxic Politics' for Delaying Sandy Aid

NJ's governor says House Republicans' moves to delay a Superstorm Sandy relief bill are "disgusting to watch." Christie saved his harshest criticism for House Speaker John Boehner.

Gov. Chris Christie is placing blame for the lengthy delay in approval of a Superstorm Sandy relief bill squarely on the shoulders of combative U.S. House of Representative Republicans, specifically Speaker John Boehner. Christie offered a scathing rebuke of Boehner and waffling Republicans during a press conference in Trenton Wednesday afternoon, saying Congress has failed in its primary purpose, to protect its own citizens. Residents of New York and New Jersey are being used as pawns in a game of politics, he said, and that's why this country's citizens "hate" Washington, DC. "Last night, politics was placed before help for our citizens," Christie said. "For me, it was disappointing and disgusting to watch." Christie said he and New York…

UPDATE: Congress Shelves $60 Billion in Sandy Recovery Money; NJ Reps Blame GOP

Frank Lautenberg, Chris Smith and other New Jersey-area congressman rip Congressional leadership for failing to pass the bill

Officials from states hardest hit by Superstorm Sandy blasted Congressional Republicans on Wednesday for not passing a bill that would fund $60 billion toward recovery efforts. In a release, Democratic Sen. Frank Lautenberg said the move denies aid to "families, communities and businesses that were devastated by one of the worst storms to ever hit the United States. “Denying emergency aid to Superstorm Sandy victims is a new low for House Republicans,” Lautenberg said. Lautenberg said Congress should put partisan politics aside, as it does for other disaster recovery efforts, and "extend a helping hand to help them get back up." "Helping struggling families recover from disasters has never been a partisan issue in Washington and it never …

PHOTOS: Seaside Roller Coaster Up Close; Future Plotted for Beaches Ravaged by Sandy

Legislators receive tour of Shore destruction on Thursday.

Members of the New Jersey Assembly toured Ocean County communities devastated by Superstorm Sandy on Thursday. The tour, led by State Police Superintendent Col. Rick Fuentes, along with local officials, gave lawmakers and members of the press an up-close look at what Sandy left behind—including the remnants of the Seaside Heights boardwalk and the now-iconic Jet Star roller coaster, which dropped from Casino Pier to the ocean during the storm. Casino Pier will be repaired in what is estimated to be a $45 million project, Seaside Heights Police Chief Thomas Boyd said, and the roller coaster will be removed from the ocean floor. However it is unlikely that Funtown Pier in neighboring Seaside Park will be rebuilt. Though there was talk of …

Superstorm Sandy Relief Drive Hits Home for Highland Students

After a huge school and community outpouring of donations, a truck bearing supplies heads for Wildwood Wednesday morning.

One by one, the bags and boxes started piling up outside of Highland Regional High School Tuesday afternoon. With each trip between the gym and a waiting truck, the pile grew a little larger and so did the evidence of Gloucester Township’s generosity. By the time it was over, Highland students and staff stuffed a 17-foot U-Haul to the brim with supplies and donations for people displaced by Superstorm Sandy. With barely enough room to wedge in the last item, a highchair, the teens and adults loaded hundreds of pairs of jeans, warm clothing, shoes, water, food and even televisions and lamps. The U-Haul—and a busload of students in tow—will head down to Wildwood this morning, where Highland students will hand off the donations to their peers…

Sandy Days Tacked on to End of BHPRSD Calendar

Attention, BHPRSD seniors: You will be graduating (at least) two days later than you thought.

The Black Horse Pike Regional School District Board of Education voted Thursday night to add two days to the end of the 2012-13 school calendar to make up for days lost to Superstorm Sandy last month. The two school days canceled due to Sandy on Oct. 29 and 30 will be made up on Thursday, June 20, and Friday, June 21, which is now slated as Graduation Day for seniors at Black Horse Pike Regional School District's three high schools—Highland, Timber Creek and Triton. This schedule is, of course, tentative and could again change depending on how many, if any, snow days the district uses this coming winter. Superintendent John Golden noted the next three unplanned school closings would be tacked onto the end of the school calendar. So, in the…

Twice Postponed, Camco Flu Clinic Rescheduled

The flu clinic at Camden County Tech is today.

Twice postponed due to lousy weather, the Camden County flu clinic at Camden County Technical Schools-Gloucester Township Campus will be held today (Wednesday, Nov. 14). The flu clinic at the Berlin-Cross Keys Road school initially was scheduled for Oct. 30, but was postponed due to Superstorm Sandy. The county announced the clinic would be held on Nov. 7, but then a nor'easter brought an early snowstorm to our area, forcing a second postponement. Good news—the National Weather Service is calling for sunny skies and a high of 49 in Sicklerville today, so a hurricane or a snowstorm is highly unlikely. The clinic will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. Camden County Freeholder Carmen Rodriguez, who serves as the board's liaison to the county Health …
