Next Step Mediation, but Township Teachers Turn Out Anyway [VIDEO]

Gloucester Township school district teachers have worked without a new contract since June.

About 150 teachers turned out for the Gloucester Township school board meeting Monday. Just about all were clad in bright, red polo shirts and blue and white buttons that read "United in Excellence." In a state where it's illegal for teachers to strike, the township educators were flexing their muscles in another way. "We just wanted make sure they don't forget about us," said Gloucester Township Education Association President Angel McDermott. She said the next step is mediation for the 600-plus members in her bargaining unit. Their contract expired in June and now they're waiting for one of a limited number of state mediators to become available. Until then, at board meetings like Monday's at Glen Landing Middle School, McDermott and the…

Our children went all through Gloucester Twp. schools and did extremely well there. We chose Glo Twp to purchase our home 35 years ago because of the excellent school district. The teachers and staff were caring, supportive and did their jobs extremely well. The budget always passed because parents were happy with the school system. Deadlocked: Gloucester Twp. Teacher Negotiations Still at Impasse

Fact-finding is coming up in two months, but could an informal meeting before then bridge the contract settlement gap? Only if the school board and teachers union can actually agree to meet.

The two sides agree on very little, except this: No one can remember the last time negotiations took this long or progressed to this point. “We have never been to this stage,” GTEA President Angel McDermott said at the Jan. 28 board meeting. “In my 16 years as president (and) my six years as negotiations chair before that, we have never reached this stage. This is new …

Teachers Protest Lack of Contract Outside Board Meeting

Gloucester Township Public Schools teachers have been without a contract since July 1.

Roughly 100 Gloucester Township Public Schools (GTPS) teachers picketed outside of the district's Erial Road administration building Monday night prior to the GTPS Board of Education's reorganization meeting. The teachers have been working without a new contract since their last deal with the district expired June 30, 2012. "The members wanted to make sure the board knows we want a contract," Gloucester Township Education Association President Angel McDermott said. Many of the teachers who showed up to protest the lack of a contract were carrying signs that read, "Settle a fair contract." The teachers' union wants to resume contract talks with the board and could have a presence at the board's next meeting later this month, McDermott said…

Bilodeau is doing two jobs and receives a stipend for being superintendent. He's not receiving two salaries. The school board is made up entirely of politicos who are part of the democratic machine in GT. The Mercado job was created to put one of them inside the district. The school board is making all decisions - that's why so many administrators have left. Real educators aren't allowed anymore.   more ›
