Timber Creek Blasts Past Kingsway

The Chargers overcome 7-0 deficit by scoring 25 unanswered points and by getting 125 yards on the ground from Khalil Pierce.

WOOLWICH TOWNSHIP—The Timber Creek Chargers overcame a rough first quarter by scoring 25 unanswered points in the final three quarters to defeat the Kingsway Dragons on the road 25-7. The game was played in rainy conditions that made it difficult for either team to move the ball through the air. Both teams resorted to the ground game early and often and in the first quarter, it was Kingsway controlling  the flow of the game. The Dragons got solid field position on their second drive of the game, starting on the Chargers' 47. They went on a seven-play drive that lasted just over three minutes. The drive ended when quarterback Tyler Barnholt found running back Ray Lawry on a screen pass. Lawry dodged a pair of tacklers to dance into the end …

New Arrival Gives Timber Creek Football Huge Boost

Transfer junior Greg Webb gives Timber Creek a big force on the defensive line, joining senior linebacker Quanzell Lambert to create a powerful one-two punch.

In the 2010 season, Timber Creek football's defense allowed more than 24 points per game, at times offsetting a solid performance from the offense and leading to a 5-5 record one year after the Chargers went to the South Jersey Group 3 championship game. This season, Timber Creek has a new weapon on the defensive front that could help them return to the top of Group 3. Junior defensive tackle Greg Webb, who played the last two seasons for Paul VI High School, where he led the Eagles in tackles and was second in sacks last season, has transferred to Timber Creek and should give their defense an incredible boost in 2011. “Last year we had kids that really played hard and gave us everything they had,” said Timber Creek head coach Rob Hinson…

Lenape Gets the Better of Timber Creek

The Chargers fell behind early and never recovered.

MEDFORD—Even during warm-ups, Lenape senior Jeff McGarry looked imposing on the mound. Part of it was his size, as the tall and lean hurler dwarfed his own teammates, not to mention the youthful Timber Creek baseball team. The rest of the intimidation came from the sound that his catcher’s mitt was making with each pitch he threw. It was Timber Creek’s second game against a Lenape Regional School District school in three days. The Chargers dropped Monday’s contest to Shawnee, 13-2.  Behind McGarry, who at one point struck out five consecutive batters, the Indians (11-4) picked up where there district rival left off, getting out to a big lead and routing the Chargers (5-12). The game was called after the Chargers were retired in the top of …

First Inning Dooms Lady Chargers

Shawnee plated eight in the first inning and never looked back.

MEDFORD—After losing three of its last four, the Timber Creek softball team was well aware of what lay ahead the remainder of the season: seven games in nine days. That's right—a very uncharacteristic seven games in nine days. It is a stretch run that comes at a bad time for the Lady Chargers, who have scuffled since the beginning of the month, as they headed to Shawnee for a divisional rivalry matchup on Monday with a team that was pacing them in the standings. Against the Lady Renegades (8-6), Timber Creek stumbled out of the gate, committing four first-inning errors and surrendering eight runs on the way to losing the game, 12-2. The loss dropped the Lady Chargers to 9-9 on the season. “It was definitely a tough one. What did we put …

Cherokee Heats Up, Rolls to Win Over Lady Chargers

Timber Creek lost for the second time in as many days, falling to 8-7 on the year.

It has not been a particularly kind start to the month of May for the Timber Creek softball team. As the season has matured, so has the level of competition the Lady Chargers have faced. To put it simply; it’s getting tougher to find a way to win. On Tuesday, Timber Creek (8-7) lost its second game in as many days as Cherokee’s bats got to starting pitcher Brianna Fisher early on the way to an 11-4 victory. The loss did not sit well with the team, which held a players-only meeting immediately following the game. “I think we are just trying to stick together,” shortstop Candice Dunn said after the game. “It’s getting tough as the season is going on. The teams we are facing, they keep getting better, and we need to just stick together.” …

Camden Catholic's Messina Fans 18 Lady Chargers

The senior pitcher was perfect through six innings, and allowed only one hit as the Irish topped Timber Creek.

CHERRY HILL—Ask Laura Messina about her time on the mound on Monday and the Camden Catholic senior won't be able to tell you much about it. She might be able to explain it in just a few words and some self-directed constructive criticism about her batting skills. A look at the box score tells a different story. Messina’s performance was near perfect as the Irish defeated Timber Creek, 6-0, behind their senior pitcher’s 18 strikeouts. She surrendered just one hit, a double to Vicki Maffei with one out in the seventh. It was only the fourth ball that Timber Creek managed to put in play all game. “I did good. I can‘t hit still,” Messina said about her day on (and off) the mound. “Our team did really well, we pulled together and got the win.” …

Timber Creek Grabs Two Wins, Charger Classic Crown

Brianna Fisher, Candice Dunn and Vicki Maffei were named to the All-Tournament team as Timber Creek triumphed at the Charger Classic.

Wilson Athletic Complex on Sunday as the Timber Creek Lady Chargers played the roles of both host and winning team of the Timber Creek Charger Classic Softball Tournament. The Chargers triumphed over the Haddon Township Lady Hawks in the championship game, 10-8, on the efforts of senior captain Vicki Maffei and sophomores Candice Dunn and Brianna Fisher. The three Chargers were named to the All-Tournament team for their efforts as the Chargers opened their season with two wins. "It's so important," Chargers coach Marci Logan said about getting her team off to a winning start. "We have been working so hard in the preseason that to get two wins (Sunday) and to be 2-0 going into (today) is amazing…

Chargers Advance to Group III Semis by Overtime Win

Jasmine Martin hit a buzzer-beating three-point shot to send the game at Kingsway to overtime, where Timber Creek prevailed.

SWEDESBORO—There wasn't any room for error when the Timber Creek girls' basketball team came out of its final time-out with only 11 seconds remaining. The Chargers, who had trailed for almost the entire game, were down three points. The season hung in the balance. There was little mystery in who would be getting the ball. The Chargers knew it, Kingsway knew it, the crowd knew it. Jasmine Martin wanted the ball. She told head coach Donna Clark as much in the huddle. She was not going to miss. Martin defied three defenders as time expired, heaving a three-pointer from the corner that found nothing but the bottom of the net. The clutch shot forced the game into overtime, and the Chargers never looked back, beating the Dragons, 44-43, in the …
