All six teams will likely qualify for the basketball postseason thanks to the new power point system.
Sometimes, a rule change can be a game-winner. The New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA) will use a power-point system to determine the state basketball tournaments for the first time this season, going away from the traditional win-loss record. The power point system—which is also used in football, soccer and wrestling among others—takes into account the records of opponents and quality of competition. The NJSIAA released the power rankings on Tuesday, giving teams an indication of where they stand heading into Saturday’s cutoff date. Triton senior Deja Bullock will head to La Salle University to play basketball on a full scholarship.
Not a lot went right for the Triton Regional High School girls’ basketball team in its opening game of the 2011-12 season. The Mustangs suffered a 51-34 defeat to Paul VI in a game Deja Bullock remembers as being “embarrassing.” However, it turns out that game had great significance to Bullock and her future. A scout from La Salle University was in attendance during that contest and liked what he saw from the then junior. “They stayed throughout the whole game and that next day my mom came in contact with the coach. They were talking and the coach was saying he liked (my) size and that (I) played through the whole game,” Bullock said. Highland, Triton and Timber Creek each has potential, but finding balanced scoring will be the key to victories.
Although she is just a junior, Deja Bullock has already established herself as one of the best players in the conference. The sharpshooter has 601 career points and has a shot at 1,000 by season’s end if things go well. For Triton head coach Rich Cooper, the focus is not on Bullock, but making sure the players surrounding her are up to the task. It will take a team effort, Cooper said, for the Mustangs to make big strides off a seven-win season. “That’s one of the focuses we have—everyone has to be a threat on the court,” Cooper said. “The last couple years, a defender has been behind her and in front of her and other teams dare someone else to score. No one even wanted to score in the past. This year we have players that want to shoot.“ …
