Officials reportedly explore the idea of putting armed police officers in Gloucester Township's K-8 schools.
Gloucester Township Mayor David Mayer and Police Chief W. Harry Earle met with local education officials Monday night to discuss security upgrades, including the possibility of adding armed police officers to K-8 schools, according to officials. Mayer and Earle did not attend Monday's Township Council meeting, instead attending the school security session. The security meeting was called in the wake of the Dec. 14 school shooting in Newtown, CT, in which a lone gunman killed 26 people, including 20 young students. "Has there been a discussion with Gloucester Township school board about an armed officer in their schools?" Erial resident Tom Crone asked Council. "That's what they're doing tonight," Council President Glen Bianchini responded…

Gloucester Township Police Chief W. Harry Earle says the added patrol coverage won't have much impact on the way his department does things.
Gloucester Township Police Chief W. Harry Earle is confident local police are ready to take over patrols of Camden County-owned properties in the township's Lakeland section. The local police force has spent the past few months learning the lay of the land in an area of the township Camden County Park Police have patrolled to this point. "One important area that we did focus on was training," Earle said. "We wanted to ensure going through that process that we're familiar with that complex." The coverage transition from county park to local police officers will be finalized Monday at 8 a.m. Gloucester Township Police Department will now patrol and respond to calls for service at several county-owned properties in the Lakeland area, …

Township officials say a failure to register its ambulances was the latest in a series of issues with the privately run Gloucester Township EMS Alliance.
UPDATE, 5:27 p.m. 6/26: New Jersey Department of Health spokeswoman Donna Leusner confirmed shortly after 5 p.m. Tuesday that three of five Gloucester Township EMS Alliance ambulances have been cleared to return to service. She indicated that of the five ambulances found to have been in operation while unregistered, the registration for one had expired in March. ---------- One thing is certain: Gloucester Township EMS Alliance, a private, nonprofit emergency-medical services provider based in the township's Erial section, will no longer be running its ambulances to emergency calls in Gloucester Township. The reasons behind the township's decision to banish EMS Alliance ambulances will likely be debated for months, if not years, to come, as…

The Police Department's first license-plate reader has registered 6,185 "hits" since mid-December, the chief said.
Township Council is expected to vote this Monday to approve the purchase of two new license-plate readers for police. Gloucester Township Police Department put its first automated license plate recognition system, which works through a patrol vehicle's laptop computer, in service late last year. "It's been very successful both in terms of finding vehicles where the drivers are suspended and lead to a number of arrests," Police Chief W. Harry Earle said. The devices cost about $16,000 each, Business Administrator Tom Cardis said during Monday night's Council work session, and are included in the township's 2012 capital budget. Police touted the technology in January after it helped lead to the recovery of a car stolen out of Philadelphia …

Police departments in seven Camden County municipalities, including Gloucester Township, are now using e-tickets.
They're cheaper and they're safer for the police officers who are using them. That's essentially how officials from seven Camden County towns described the new e-ticketing systems their towns' police officers are now using, during a press conference held inside Gloucester Township's Erial Road Public Works Department garage Wednesday afternoon to tout the new technology. Bellmawr Police Chief William Walsh brought together the seven towns—Gloucester Township, Bellmawr, Haddon Heights, Magnolia, Oaklyn, Pine Hill and Runnemede—that agreed to enter into a shared-services agreement to purchase the e-ticketing systems last year. The seven towns shared the initial $9,126 cost for the software and database state interface, which is hosted in …

The memorial was started in the wake of K-9 Schultz's tragic death in November 2010.
A memorial honoring Gloucester Township Police Department K-9s is almost done. The memorial, which is located in Gloucester Township Community Park, just needs some lighting for its flag poles and a few other minor improvements before it is officially dedicated this spring. Money collected through the K-9 Schultz Memorial Fund was used to pay for the new memorial. K-9 Schultz was killed in the line of duty on Nov. 30, 2010, when struck by several cars on Route 42 while attempting to apprehend a suspect in the robbery of a Chinese restaurant on Church Street. "The goal all along was to have a nice memorial, and I think it's worked out," Police Chief W. Harry Earle said on Thursday. "It looks fantastic." The township has also used the …
