Fire Districts 5 and 6 to Consolidate?

Erial fire commissioners brought the proposal to Council Wednesday night.

Erial fire commissioners on Wednesday received the Township Council's informal approval to create an exploratory committee to analyze the feasibility of merging Fire Districts 5 and 6. The Lambs Terrace Fire Co.-Erial Fire Department consolidation could potentially save the two districts nearly $200,000 right away, the District 6 commissioners said, in part by eliminating five commissioner positions—there are currently 10 commissioners for the two fire districts—and merging other administrative services. "We're going to be financially strained going forward," District 6 Commissioner George Brown told Council. "We have to plan for it and we have to think outside of the box. Why Do NJ Residents Pay More for Local Government?

A new study suggests more consolidation efforts would save Garden State taxpayers some money.

A new study by Ball State University's Center for Business and Economic Research claims that New Jersey residents pay roughly $700 per year more for government services than do the residents of Pennsylvania or Connecticut because the state has so many inefficient local governments. But attempts to significantly consolidate local governments and services have rarely been successful in New Jersey. Locally, Gloucester Township entered a trash-collection alliance with Cherry Hill and Merchantville in late 2010 to save the township roughly $650,000 over five years. In Camden County, talk of a regionalized police force has intensified over the past 10 months or so. But, for the most part, New Jersey residents seem to be anti-consolidation. Why? …
