Fire Districts 5 and 6 to Consolidate?

Erial fire commissioners brought the proposal to Council Wednesday night.

Erial fire commissioners on Wednesday received the Township Council's informal approval to create an exploratory committee to analyze the feasibility of merging Fire Districts 5 and 6. The Lambs Terrace Fire Co.-Erial Fire Department consolidation could potentially save the two districts nearly $200,000 right away, the District 6 commissioners said, in part by eliminating five commissioner positions—there are currently 10 commissioners for the two fire districts—and merging other administrative services. "We're going to be financially strained going forward," District 6 Commissioner George Brown told Council. "We have to plan for it and we have to think outside of the box. As (Mayor David Mayer) said, if we don't do it, we're going to be …

Fire Prevention Night a Big Hit

Families came out to Lowe's in droves Monday night.

The main reason for hosting Fire Prevention Night is to teach children about fire safety. There's also some fun to be had, and that surely was the case at the big event hosted by the Erial Fire Department and Lambs Terrace Fire Co. in the township's Sicklerville section on Monday night. "This is great. I'm here every year. This is his second year here," Stratford resident Charles Ashwell said, pointing to his 3-year-old son, Nicholas, "and he loves it." A volunteer firefighter himself, Ashwell noted the importance of familiarizing children with firefighters and their equipment at an early age. By the time Fire Prevention Night officially began at 7 p.m., a large line had formed outside of the Cross Keys Road Lowe's home improvement store. …

Several to Hospital After Two Crashes on Cross Keys Road

Back-to-back two-car accidents on Cross Keys Road sent several people to area hospitals.

Two separate accidents at Cross Keys and Williamstown Erial roads late Saturday sent several people to area hospitals. The accidents, which occurred within moments of each other at the township's border with Winslow Township, happened around 11:30 p.m. Saturday, Erial Fire Commissioner George Brown said. Several people from the four cars involved in the accidents were sent to area hospitals, Brown said. The fire commissioner indicated the first accident caused the second. Personnel from Lambs Terrace Fire Co., Gloucester Township EMS Alliance, Winslow Township EMS, and the Gloucester and Winslow township police departments responded to the accident.

Council Approves Fire Inspection Fee Hike

The vote was unanimous, and no one from the public opposed the measure during the hearing.

For the first time in nearly two decades, fire inspection fees in the township will be going up. Council unanimously approved on final reading Monday night an ordinance that will increase the fees charged by the township's six fire districts for annual non-life hazard inspections. The fees had remained unchanged since 1993. Conservative activists later criticized the fee hike as "political sleight of hand." The increases are significantly higher for larger buildings, with the fees for buildings of more than 100,000 square feet more than doubled by the ordinance. The ordinance relates only to buildings not listed as "life hazard use" by the state Bureau of Fire Safety. Non-life hazard uses include office buildings and warehouses. …

We have 6 independent fire districts that cover our town. Their boards are elected by the people in separate elections. They generate and pass their own budgets and tax levies completly independent of Mayor and Council and are accountable only to the voters. Some towns such as Cherry Hill have "spun off" the fire districts from the municipal budget for the express reason that any increases were …   more ›
